While they are known throughout the world for their unique individual art, Robert Roesch and Suzanne Reese-Horvitz have collaborated on many large-scale public commissions in glass and steel, and have served as cultural advisors to United States embassies in the Middle East, South America, and Southeast Asia. Their pieces explore the scientific as well as the aesthetic, combining the issues of a “green” world by using solar power to soften and transform the severity of the planes of cor-ten steel which comprise their work. Whereas Roesch’s contribution to the collaboration deals with formal shapes and the raw power of the sculptural medium, Reese-Horvitz adds painterly surface treatments that establish Transduction – Hamilton’s placement in a mapping context. Robert Roesch was born in Buffalo, New York, in 1946. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the School of Art and Design, State University of New York, Farmington and received his Bachelor of Fine Arts diploma from the School of Fine Arts, Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, New York. He has taught at several institutions and is at present an Instructor of Fine Arts at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia. Roesch has received twelve grants, including a Senior Specialist Fulbright Award he shared with Suzanne Reese-Horvitz. His sculptures are included in collections throughout the world. Among his many accomplishments are twenty major public art projects. His most recent honor was a major commission as an invited artist by the Chinese government and the Academy of Fine Arts in Hang Zhou, China. Suzanne Reese-Horvitz was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1940. She received her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees from University of the Arts, Philadelphia, and her Doctorate in Philosophy in College Teaching of the Fine Arts from Columbia University in New York City. She was director and founder of NEXUS/Foundation For Today’s Art. Her work has been collected by such prestigious institutions as the Musee d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, France; Glasmuseum, Ebeltoft, Denmark; Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, British Columbia; and Bibliotheca Alexandrina Museum, Alexandria, Egypt; among others. | |
